Website accessibility

People with disabilities are very frequent users of the Internet. However, their disability often means they are continually confronted with barriers regarding technical accessibility and navigation.

For this reason, the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) established accessibility guidelines as early as 1999, which make it easier for disabled people to access the Internet and the information it offers. These guidelines became part of the German government’s 2002 act on barrier-free information technology (BITV). The act is designed to ensure that new and modified public information is offered in accordance with the law on the equality of disabled people.

To make unlimited access to all information possible, barrier-free websites have to fulfil a set of content, design and technical requirements stipulated by the BITV. These are divided into two priority levels. Sal. Oppenheim’s Internet presence is barrier-free in its main features due to the following characteristics:

  • Content and layout are completely separate from each other
  • The accessibility of the content can be guaranteed without style sheets and without JavaScript, in pure text browsers or through screen readers
  • Colour and contrasts have been optimised
  • There is a free choice of font size
  • The content can be controlled using the keyboard
  • There is extra information available to clearly identify links (so-called link titles)
  • Use of W3C technology with a valid code
